Established in 1983, it operates more than 60 facilities across 20 states and provides correctional services to federal, state, and local government agencies. CCA specializes in the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of prisons, detention centers, and other correctional facilities. Its services include inmate transportation, healthcare, rehabilitation programs, and education. CCA has been the subject of controversy and criticism for profiting from mass incarceration, poor living conditions, understaffing, and alleged human rights violations. In 2016, CCA changed its name to CoreCivic, reflecting a shift towards non-prison services such as immigration detention and reentry programs.
